mondays run

monday was fortunately a warm day in logan.  i finished with school at five o'clock so went out for an evening run.  it was a fun four miles.  i was a bit sore from the weekends adventures.  my time was not that great.  it took me 47 minutes.  my feet hurt. ouch.

Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.
-- T. Alan Armstrong

there is nothing about running that comes easy for me.  i suck at running.  my legs are short.  my joints start aching.  my hips and knees scream after about four miles.  i am slow.  very slow.   but despite all of these things, i choose to run.  and i feel success not in speed, but in completion.  i love following a training schedule.  i still get to cross off a four mile run, even if it takes me four hours.  i went that distance.  who cares how fast?  i did it, and thats more then some can say.

blacksmith fork canyon

later on that same saturday i went on a bike ride.  i did one of my very favorite rides of all time.  i left from my home on canyon road then went north into nibley.  from main street i took a left onto hollow road.  this connects you to blacksmith fork canyon road.  at this point you are at mile nine.  then you continue up the canyon for 14 miles.  it is a rolling canyon with a steady climb to the top.  this was the most beautiful ride i have ever been on to date.  it was absolutely breathtaking.  i adore this time of year.

this is the same canyon i ran down when i did the top of utah marathon.  i experienced major flash backs to sheer pain and misery.  oh how i love my bike.

the only bummer about this ride is the terrible head winds on the way back down.  i would have rather been climbing up the canyon instead of going down.  gross.

mother, if your out there, i hope his post inspires you to come up for one last good fifty miler for the year.

5.5 miles in 57 minutes

my first run was on saturday.  i left at 10:00 for my 5.5 miler.  i went out my front door and took a left, running to the end of canyon road.  i ended up at merle and olson park, where the local farmers market is held.  i ran around the park then back up canyon road.  i passed my place and continued to first dam.  this was when i turned around and went back home.

it was much more difficult then i anticipated.  it was frustrating for me when my left knee started tweaking around mile 4.  my feet were also covered in hot spots, the inevitable sign of future blisters.  i am running in $30 little boys shoes.  and they are terrible.  i realized after this run that to avoid injury while training i must invest in some real running shoes.  donations are being accepted.

this is the shoe i ran in. and it sucked.
this is the shoe i ran my marathon in. and i want them back.

overall this run left me feeling motivated to get back in the groove.

halloween half

my cousin lyndsey and i are running "the halloween half" in provo.  the last time i focused on running was when i was training for the top of utah marathon.  it was horrible.  and since then i have discovered biking which is far better.  but something about this challenge hooked me. so here i am, lacing up the ol' nikes.  here is my training plan.
